Anchorage Day of Action to Protect Abortion Event

Planned Parenthood West, ACLU Alaska, Stand Up Alaska, March on Alaska and other organizations will hold an "Anchorage Day of Action to Protect Abortion" event this Saturday, October 2 at the Delaney Park Strip from noon to 2 p.m.

The event is being held in response to the devastating six-week Texas abortion law that went into effect on Sept. 1. The law is the first of its kind to rely on enforcement by private individuals through civil lawsuits, rather than by the government through criminal or civil enforcement.

According to event organizers, abortion access across America and in Alaska is under the greatest threat it has been in nearly 50 years.

In Alaska, a six-week abortion ban last session was cosponsored by 18 Republicans in the House, many of whom are still in the legislature:

Rep. Sarah Vance, Rep. George Rauscher, Rep. Kelly Merrick, Rep. Louise Stutes, Rep. DeLena Johnson, Rep. Steve Thompson, Rep. Laddie Shaw, Rep. Bart LeBon, Rep. Ben Carpenter, Rep. Cathy Tilton and Rep. Sarah Rasmussen.

This Saturday's event will host speakers from 1-2 p.m. and offer a COVID vaccination clinic from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in addition to other activities and will be livestreamed for those unable to attend.

Over 160 people have already expressed interest in attending the event. Individuals who wish to volunteer or who want to help in other ways are asked to fill out this form.
