Midtown Mall Says it Does Not Support Mask Burning "Rally"

A recent post to the Save Anchorage Facebook group advertised a "Mask Burning Rally & Protest," to be held on March 28, 2021, in the parking lot of the Midtown Mall. The online group has backed fringe candidate David Bronson in his quest to become Anchorage's next mayor.

After learning of the planned event, Midtown Mall responded on Facebook, writing that they did not condone or support the event and had notified the Anchorage Police Department. One Anchorage resident, concerned about the event, reached out to the mall and was told that the Midtown Mall was a "unique property" in that multiple companies manage it.

Amber Musso, Marketing & Events Director for Midtown Mall, wrote in response that the parking lot, which would potentially be impacted by the planned fiery event, is owned by Seritage Growth Properties and managed by JLL. Musso forwarded the feedback on the rally to JLL, alerted Seritage Growth Properties, and thanked the resident for sharing the information with them.

It wasn't immediately clear if organizers and supporters of the mask-burning rally intended to relocate the event elsewhere or whether the rally would continue as planned.

At a recent Anchorage Assembly meeting, a woman attempted to light her mask on fire, making the meeting toasty but a bit concerning for some who watched the event unfold as the meeting was live-streamed by the Municipality of Anchorage.
