Donald Trump's MAGA insurrectionists took Capitol Hill yesterday as the Nation watched in disbelief - but not in shock - as many had warned that a day like this would come.
The law enforcement response to yesterday's events was much different than we saw when Donald Trump tear-gassed peaceful protestors to clear the way for his photo-op in Lafayette Park. America watched expecting to see unmarked federal agents of former AG Barr's Gestapo whisk people away in unmarked vehicles, preceded by a hail of rubber bullets and tear gas crashing down on the heads of insurrectionists.
None of that happened.
Instead, Donald Trump's MAGA cult was treated with kid gloves after they breached Capitol Hill and committed numerous federal crimes. The events of January 6, 2021, left four people dead and was a brazen attempt by Donald Trump to steal the lawful presidential election. The FBI is now seeking those who sought to overturn the results of a free and fair election.
In Anchorage, we too have struggled with the actions of MAGA, as they run amok on social media posting violent, homophobic, transphobic, racist rhetoric and spreading conspiracy theories about COVID-19, masks, and George Soros.
Locals have attempted to intimidate local officials, standing armed outside the Anchorage Assembly chambers and chanting "tyranny" in front of the Assembly. At least one person has been removed from the chambers in recent weeks, and some Anchorage residents have raised concerns on social media about whether the security provided at Assembly meetings is adequate.
Videos exist of a mob event that occurred last August. The videos have raised more than one eyebrow. The Alaska Landmine said of that evening, "While Mayor Berkowitz was leaving the Assembly Chambers, a woman shouted, "I am going to burn your house down!" Several people heard her say this."
Alaskans are often subjected to social media posts and comments recommending the armed insurrection of the Anchorage Assembly Chambers. One Facebook user recently wrote, "We could literally walk in and take over, soon it will happen. Let the election speak."
Those who have followed this blog for even a little time know that the above quote is just one of numerous concerning comments directed at members of the Anchorage Assembly. For months they have threatened violence against elected officials - dangerous rhetoric must never be tolerated or accepted as the new normal. Whether you are left, or right - it doesn't matter. Violence is never an acceptable means to an end.
This is not who we should be as Americans, but it is who the MAGA cult has become...and already they attempt to justify yesterday's horrific events because they have bought into Trump's Big Lie.
You'll hear a lot from conservatives over the coming weeks. They will denounce the violent acts of the insurrectionists but still subscribe to the ideals and values of Donald Trump's vision for America - ideals and values that voters overwhelmingly rejected when they elected Joe Biden.
They'll attempt to distance themselves from the disgraceful fall of Trump while still working to advance his agenda even after he's long gone. It's important to remember what that agenda is - promoting conspiracy theories, dividing the country along racial lines, increasing income disparity, and instilling xenophobia into the hearts and minds of those who lack the insight to know that this country was founded on the backs of enslaved people and immigrants. MAGA cultists will continue to bully and threaten others through fear and attempt to bully you into accepting their un-American views.
In the end, through extensive media documentation yesterday - the MAGA cultists showed all of America who they are, what they believe, and what they stand for. Reject them.
